How can I reduce the environmental impact of my office?

• Through making the following changes, the overall environmental impact of the office can be reduced.

• Recycle more – your office may recycle paper and card, but look for other materials that can be recycled in the office such as printer cartridges and drinks cans.

• Review the office IT equipment – when updating IT equipment, choose the
equipment that uses the least amount of energy.

• Use technology to your environmental advantage – encourage employees to
send emails instead of post where possible to save money and resources, make
sure a disclaimer is on the bottom of all emails asking recipients whether they need to print the mail and use video conferencing where possible, saving time, energy and the resources involved in moving employees between locations.

• Avoid faxing where possible – fax machines contain parts that are both difficult to dispose of and use large amounts of energy. Instead encourage staff to email PDF documents or use online faxing services.

• Position desks near to the windows to make the most of natural light reducing the need for lighting and saving on electricity costs.
